West Auckland Youngsters have safety in mind

YOUNGSTERS have been jazzing up their high-visibility jackets to improve their safety in the dark nights. Pupils at Oakley Cross Primary School in West Auckland, County Durham, have spent a week learning about road safety. And their last activity was to customise their own high-viz jackets making it more likely they will wear them.
The Road Safety Week was run by Sustrans, a charity that is encouraging sustainable transport.Sustrans Schools Officer, Joe Spedding, said: “I was impressed with the effort that the pupils put in, there were some great blinged up vests.
“This is a fun activity with a serious message about the steps we can take to make ourselves more visible to others at dusk or when it’s dark.
“Though darker evenings may be a worry for parents, this shouldn’t prevent them from encouraging their children to cycle, scoot or walk to school.
“Today the children have learned that there are a number of things we can do to improve safety, such as wearing some high-viz clothing or placing reflective stickers on your bike.Sustrans work in schools across South Durham, in partnership with Local Motion and Durham County Council, encouraging pupils and parents to make cheaper, greener, healthier, journeys to school.
